Oral Medicine and Radiology encompasses the diagnosis of oral and maxillofacial diseases, management of complex medical conditions affecting the oral mucosa and salivary glands and treatment of orofacial pain and temporomandibular disorders. This specialized field within dentistry integrates Oral Medicine and Craniofacial Radiology, serving as a crucial link between dentistry and medicine for early detection of systemic diseases with oral manifestations.
The department was established in the year 2002. The department offers two programs: BDS and MDS. In the undergraduate curriculum, Oral Medicine and Radiology is taught in the 3rd year and Final Year part A. The three-year MDS program, initiated in 2011 by the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology, equips students with expertise in both oral Medicine and maxillofacial radiology. Led by esteemed faculty members with extensive experience, the department emphasizes practice-based learning, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge in clinical settings.
Postgraduate students are encouraged to innovate and conduct research, exploring novel diagnostic and therapeutic techniques such as TENS, trigger-point injections, intralesional injections. The department stands out for providing CBCT radiographic services, contributing a substantial patient database ideal for short-term studies and research initiatives. The Department conducts annual CBCT and Tobacco cessation training programmes for the interns and post-graduates of various departments.
“Tobacco Cessation Clinic,” integral to the department’s mission of “Prevention is better than Cure,” educates both undergraduate and postgraduate students on tobacco awareness and counselling. The clinic offers personalized sessions to patients struggling with tobacco addiction and conducts screening camps to reach underserved communities state wide.
