The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at Mar Baselios Dental College was established in 2002 with the inception of this college. The postgraduate program was started in 2011 and was recognised in the year 2014 with a yearly intake of 3 students. However, the PG program was discontinued in 2020. The department was recognised by KUHS as a Ph.D. center in 2016. Presently the department has one KUHS-approved guide, Dr. Pramod Philip Mathews, and 3 students have registered for the Ph.D. program. The department is well equipped with the necessary microscopes, microscopic slides, study models, soft tissue, and hard tissue specimens for undergraduate training. It has separate spaces for clinical examination, a student’s laboratory, a department library, and a museum with numerous mounted specimens, models, and posters.
The histopathology lab is equipped to deal with basic investigations that include routine blood tests, aspiration biopsies, exfoliative cytology, biopsies, differential staining, microbial staining, etc. The lab has a Penta head microscope, fluorescent microscope, polarising microscope, dark field microscope, and lamina flow chamber. The department has an Immunohistochemistry Laboratory.
