The Department of public health dentistry was set up in the year 2004 as a separate wing catering to the dental needs of the community nearby to the institute. Apart from its regular academic activities for the IIIrd and IVth year BDS students in the field of public health dentistry; the department gives thrust to research programs and community camps. Courses Offered Public health dentistry programme spread for 2 years (IIIrd and IVthyear) covering topics that includes :– Introduction to general dentistry Public health Dental Public health Research methodology and dental statistics Practice management ; as per the regulations by KUHAS Along with these students are provided with an in-house training for comprehensive dental care, Indices based data collection. Students are also trained to provide community based health education and preventive treatments through regular dental camps. Facilities The department fulfils all mandatory required facilities laid down by the dental council of India. This includes dental van for outreach programs, camp dental chairs and its accessories, audio visual aids etc. Ongoing research programmes Community based project called SPICE (screening program in Idukki District for oral cancer eradication)- Focuses on oral screening, detection and provision of treatment for oral cancer among the general public of Idukki district. Community based project to assess the pattern and prevalence of prophylactic and therapeutic prescription of antibiotics among dentists in Kerala. Microbiological survey to assess the prevalence of Methicillin Susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) and, Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) among dental students. An interdepartmental research project with microbiology.
